Launched in April of 2017, the GoPro Developer Program was aimed to integrate GoPro Connectivity into other products as a feature. The program launched with over 100 developers (like FisherPrice, Hot Wheels, BMW, Jaguar Land Rover and many more actively building integrations to command and control GoPro’s. GoPro’s intent was not to replace their existing products, but to augment, create new functionality and build consumer expectation that GoPro’s would be a consistent feature across all domains.
“The GoPro Developer Program is a way for us to celebrate the innovative work of our developer community and, more importantly, help enable what comes next. We’re grateful to benefit from the collective genius of the participating developers, and we’re excited to now officially support their efforts with our developer toolkits.” – Nick Woodman @ GoPro Developer Program Launch
The program offered different developer toolkits for different types of functionality, from Mobile Phone App Control (iOS & Android), to physical embedding of GoPro mounts. To be able to offer developer toolkits the team worked internally with GoPro’s engineering team to create SDK’s (Software Development Kits), API’s (Application Programming Interfaces), a new BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) Protocol, a Click-through On-boarding Portal as well as a legal framework to license tools to 3rd Party Developers.
Prior to launch the team worked with key developer to vet the technology and launch early integrations with Periscope (Live Video Streaming – Verge) and Jaguar Land Rover (Forbes).
